๐ป End-to-End Mini Project
๐ป Capstone: The Complete Workflow
Congratulations on reaching the final chapter of the Power BI Training Module! You have learned about Power Query, Data Modelling, DAX, Visualizations, and Cloud Security.
Now, it is time to prove your skills by completing an end-to-end Mini Project.
๐ The Mission
You have been hired as a BI Developer for a global retail company. They have raw, messy CSV files for their Customers, Products, and Transactions. Your manager wants a secure, automated, interactive dashboard published to the cloud.
Follow this 19-step checklist to complete the project from start to finish!
Phase 1: Ingestion & Transformation (Power Query)
[ ]1. Connect to your 3 raw data sources (Product, Customer, and Transaction files).[ ]2. Open the Power Query Editor to clean and transform the data.[ ]3. Use the profiling tools to find and handle any nulls, duplicates, or errors. Ensure all Date columns are set to theDatedata type, and Money columns are set toFixed Decimal.[ ]4. Merge and Append any necessary lookup queries (e.g., pulling the Product Category Name into the Products table) and Pivot/Unpivot any badly formatted columns.
Phase 2: Data Modelling (Star Schema)
[ ]5. Determine which tables are your Fact tables (Transactions) and which are your Dimension tables (Products, Customers).[ ]6. Build a Star Schema in the Model View by placing the Fact table in the center and arranging the Dimensions around it.[ ]7. Drag and drop the ID columns to create 1-to-Many, Single-Direction relationships. Create a dedicated Date/Calendar table and connect it to your Transaction date.
Phase 3: DAX Calculations
[ ]8. Create explicit Measures for your core metrics:Total Sales,Total Revenue,Total Profit,Total Orders, andTotal Customers.[ ]9. Use Time Intelligence to createSales YTD,Sales MTD, and Growth measures (like Year-over-Year Growth). Use Iterators (SUMX) if you need row-level multiplication for margins. UseRANKXorTOPNto create a "Top Customers" measure.
Phase 4: Visualization & Interactivity
[ ]10. Build the main KPI report page. Add Cards for top-level metrics (Sales, Profit).[ ]11. Build specific Product and Customer reports. Add a Bar Chart (Sales by Product), a Line Chart (Sales over Time), and a Map (Sales by Region). Add a Matrix for detailed drill-downs.[ ]12. Add Slicers (Year, Region, Product Category) to make the report interactive. Ensure cross-filtering works smoothly.
Phase 5: Cloud Deployment & Security
[ ]13. Publish the.pbixfile to your Workspace in the Power BI Service.[ ]14. Pin your most critical visuals to a new Dashboard for executive viewing.[ ]15. Configure Workspace Access, assigning users to Viewer, Contributor, or Admin roles based on their job.[ ]16. Apply Row-Level Security (RLS) so regional managers can only see their own country's data.[ ]17. If your data is on-premises, configure the Gateway. Setup a Scheduled Refresh to run daily at 6:00 AM.[ ]18. Bundle the finished Reports and Dashboards into a Power BI App for clean, read-only distribution to the whole company.[ ]19. (Optional) Deploy through Dev/Test/Prod using Deployment Pipelines!
If you can comfortably complete these 19 steps, you have mastered the fundamentals of Microsoft Power BI! You are now ready to take on the challenge and start building real-world enterprise dashboards.
